EFFECTS OF COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOWS ON A PERIURBAN STREAM ECOSYSTEM : Methodological approach

چکیده
Here we develop from a long term field experiment an assessment method of interstitial fauna resilience to combined sewer overflows (CSOs) effect. We address the case of “small water courses” for which the ratio of CSOs to natural flow can be 1 to much more. Biotic material was collected in the benthic and hyporheic layers. Biotic material focussed mainly on oligocheates species whose diversity, species category and abundance are resumed into metrics, called functional traits (FTrs), giving indications on flux dynamics and nutrient bio-assimilation capacity. The biotic resilience is assessed through the analysis of the response time of the biota to CSOs and natural flow characteristics, here called hydrological indices (HIs). In this aim, a series of hydrological indices are defined to reveal varying aspects of the dynamics of CSOs and natural flows. A main result is that CSOs can have both degrading and boosting effects on the biota of a stony stream. Some CSOs characteristics can explain the physical processes supporting these contrasting effects. In particular the geomorphic characteristics of the water course. Management perspectives emerge from the CSOs hydrological indices and resilience of the biota.

Evaluation of Ecotoxicological Risks Related to the Discharge of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) in a Periurban River
Discharges of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) into periurban rivers present risks for the concerned aquatic ecosystems. In this work, a specific ecotoxicological risk assessment methodology has been developed as management tool to municipalities equipped with CSOs. This methodology comprises a detailed description of the spatio-temporal system involved, the choice of ecological targets to be pr...
متن کاملBacterial diversity impacts as a result of combined sewer overflow in a polluted waterway
Newtown Creek is an industrial waterway and former tidal wetland in New York City. It is one of the most polluted water bodies in the United States and was designated as a superfund site in 2010. For over a century, organic compounds, heavy metals, and other forms of industrial pollution have disrupted the creek’s environment. The creek is also impacted by discharges from twenty combined sewer ...
متن کاملMulti-Level Approach of the Ecotoxicological Impact of a Combined Sewer Overflow on a Peri-Urban Stream
In periurban zones, urban wet weather discharges have been recognized as the most significant vector of pollution in aquatic environments. The discharge of this water without treatment into the aquatic environment could present an ecotoxicological risk for biocenosis. The aim of the INVASION project is to assess the potential ecotoxicological impact of a combined sewer overflow (CSO) on a peri-...

When looking at acute receiving water impacts due to combined sewer overflows the characteristics of the background diurnal sewage flux variation may influence the peak loads from combined sewer overflows (CSO) and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent significantly. In this paper, effects on the dynamic compounds transported in the sewer, on CSO discharges and WWTP loading are evaluated b...
متن کاملRemoval of nutrients from combined sewer overflows and lake water in a vertical-flow constructed wetland system.
Lake Utterslev is situated in a densely built-up area of Copenhagen, and is heavily eutrophicated from combined sewer overflows. At the same time the lake suffers from lack of water. Therefore, a 5,000 m2 vertical flow wetland system was constructed in 1998 to reduce the phosphorus discharge from combined sewer overflows without reducing the water supply to the lake. During dry periods the cons...
